Methodology and limits

How vintage stereo value estimates are built

The checker starts with conservative model or category bands, then adjusts for condition, function, service history, completeness, and selling venue. It is designed for resale planning, not insurance, estate, tax, or certified appraisal use.

Data basis

Curated price bands, not scraped live comps

V1 uses a local reference set of representative receivers, amplifiers, turntables, speakers, and console stereos. Each model stores a conservative low, typical, and high band plus value drivers, common issues, and a sold-comps-style market note.

The app does not scrape marketplaces or guarantee a final sale price. Location, seasonality, buyer trust, photos, packing skill, and local demand can all move the result outside the estimate.

Condition and cosmetics

Parts, poor, fair, good, very good, excellent, and restored grades move the base range before any venue math is applied.

Working status

Verified operation supports normal market pricing; partial, nonworking, or untested gear is discounted for repair risk.

Service history

Recent service and documented restoration can lift value, but vague recap claims do not receive the same premium.

Completeness and pickup

Manuals, boxes, covers, grilles, and local-pickup limits change buyer confidence and the reachable buyer pool.

Payout assumptions

eBay shipped sale

Marketplace fee drag, packing cost, return risk, and national buyer demand.

Local cash sale

Lower gross offers, no platform fee, and less shipping exposure.

Specialty marketplace

Enthusiast buyers with slower velocity and lower fee drag than eBay.

Dealer consignment

Convenience and inspection support in exchange for dealer margin.

Parts or repair sale

A practical floor when faults, missing parts, or restoration cost dominate.

Non-appraisal caveat

Use the estimate to set an asking range, decide whether service is worth pursuing, or compare selling venues. For insurance, donations, probate, disputes, or tax reporting, hire a qualified appraiser who can inspect the exact unit and documentation.
